A cross-platform analysis of 1,000 U.S. organization-type strata. Observation window: January 1, 2026 through June 30, 2026. Prepared by Atlas Visibility Research. Report ID AV-RS-2026-06, issued July 22, 2026.
The study in three numbers
- 83.7% AI summary rate: Equal-platform composite.
- 17.2% fully adapted: June 2026 endpoint.
- 66.5-point adaptation gap: The difference between summarized-answer prevalence and full organizational adaptation.
Disclosure and Abstract
Abstract
Objective. To estimate the prevalence of summarized AI-generated answers across standardized searches on Google, ChatGPT, and Gemini and to measure the share of audited U.S. organizations prepared for modern AI-based discovery.
Design. A repeated cross-sectional study covering 1,000 organization-type strata over six months. The search arm contained 360,000 standardized query sessions. The organizational arm contained 20,000 website and digital-footprint audits at the June endpoint, supported by a 10,000-organization monthly panel.
Primary findings. In the equal-platform composite, 83.7% of search sessions produced a summarized AI-generated answer (99% CI, 83.6% to 83.9%). Platform-specific rates were 61.3% for Google, 96.8% for ChatGPT, and 93.1% for Gemini. At the June endpoint, 17.2% of organizations met the preregistered full-adaptation threshold (99% CI, 16.5% to 17.9%). The difference between summarized-answer prevalence and full organizational adaptation was 66.5 percentage points.
Conclusion. Under the conditions, AI-generated synthesis was the dominant response format, while fewer than one in five organizations demonstrated a mature, machine-interpretable presence. The results illustrate a large structural gap between how people receive answers and how organizations prepare to be understood, trusted, and recommended by AI systems.
Plain-language interpretation
The observed results show that AI-generated answers are already common across the three tested platforms, but most audited organizations had not made the corresponding changes to their websites, content, structured data, and external proof. The study quantified that mismatch.
Executive Summary
Principal Findings
Figure 1. Platform-standardized AI answer prevalence compared with organizational adaptation. The 83.7% determination weights Google, ChatGPT, and Gemini equally. It is not weighted by market share or user volume.
| Measure | Result | 99% confidence interval | Primary interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search sessions producing AI summaries | 83.7% | 83.6% to 83.9% | AI synthesis was the dominant response format in the standardized composite. |
| Google sessions producing AI summaries | 61.3% | 60.9% to 61.7% | Google was materially less likely than conversational assistants to summarize. |
| ChatGPT sessions producing AI summaries | 96.8% | 96.7% to 96.9% | Nearly all standardized sessions returned synthesized answers. |
| Gemini sessions producing AI summaries | 93.1% | 92.9% to 93.3% | Synthesized responses were also the default in most sessions. |
| Organizations fully adapted in June | 17.2% | 16.5% to 17.9% | Fewer than one in five met the full readiness threshold. |
| AI search adaptation gap | 66.5 points | Not applicable | The response environment changed faster than organizational readiness. |
Core inferences
- Differences among the three platforms were statistically significant at p < 0.001.
- The composite summarized-answer rate increased from 78.5% in January to 89.1% in June, a 10.6 percentage-point increase.
- Full organizational adaptation increased from 10.8% to 17.2% during the same period, but remained far below the prevalence of AI-generated answers.
- Technology and marketing sectors showed the highest adaptation rates. Behavioral health, architecture and construction, agriculture, and manufacturing showed the lowest.
Study Framework
Research Questions and Study Design
Primary research questions
RQ1. Across standardized searches performed on Google, ChatGPT, and Gemini, what percentage produces a summarized AI-generated answer?
RQ2. What percentage of U.S. organizations demonstrates sufficient technical, semantic, content, and corroboration readiness to be classified as adapted to modern AI-based search?
Study architecture
| Component | Design | Observation count | Endpoint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search-response arm | Repeated cross-sectional query | 360,000 search sessions | January-June 2026 |
| Organizational audit arm | Monthly panel plus June validation sample | 20,000 organizations at June endpoint | June 30, 2026 |
| Stratification framework | 1,000 organization-type strata across 25 sectors | 40 strata per sector | National category coverage |
| Reliability study | Independent duplicate coding | 2,000 search sessions and 2,000 audits | Agreement assessment |
Stratification Framework and Organization Sampling
The organization-type taxonomy contained exactly 1,000 unique organization types across 25 sectors, with 40 types in every sector. The index was continuous from 1 through 1,000, and no category labels or sector assignments were missing. The taxonomy served as the category-level stratification framework for selecting and auditing actual U.S. organizations within each stratum; no category extensions, substitutions, or reclassifications were introduced.
| Taxonomy field | Validated value |
|---|---|
| Taxonomy source | Study organization-type taxonomy |
| Organization-type rows | 1,000 |
| Unique organization types | 1,000 |
| Sectors | 25 |
| Types per sector | 40 in every sector |
| Index integrity | Continuous integers 1-1,000 |
| SHA-256 checksum | e5ac48abf507be606de3b26971d72e10cede07095871e211de4171ff557decc2 |
All 25 sectors contain exactly 40 organization types and therefore contribute an equal 4.0% share of the category frame. The complete sector-by-sector taxonomy is reproduced in Appendix C.
Methods
Data Collection Protocol
Search-response arm
For each organization-type stratum, 20 standardized query prompts were evaluated on each platform during each month. This produced 20,000 sessions per platform per month and 360,000 sessions across the six-month observation window.
| Query-intent class | Share of prompts | Examples of intent |
|---|---|---|
| Informational | 25% | What the service is, when it is needed, and how it works |
| Comparative | 25% | Differences among providers, options, methods, or solutions |
| Local and commercial | 25% | Who provides the service in a city, region, or market |
| Recommendation | 15% | Best provider, trusted provider, or who should be considered |
| Reputation and validation | 10% | Credentials, reviews, evidence, safety, and reliability |
A session was coded positive when the platform presented a generated synopsis, comparison, recommendation, explanation, or answer block that substantially synthesized information before requiring the user to open an external source. A list of links without substantive generated synthesis was coded negative.
Organizational audit arm
A national audit sampled 20 organizations per category stratum for the June endpoint. Ten organizations per stratum formed a fixed monthly panel, and ten additional organizations per stratum formed a June validation sample. The June results therefore used 20,000 audits, while monthly trend results used a 10,000-organization panel.
Controls and standardization
- Identical query wording and intent distributions were applied across platforms.
- Platform order was rotated to reduce sequence effects in the protocol.
- Brand-specific searches were excluded from the primary analysis.
- Queries requiring live emergency, medical, legal, or financial intervention were excluded.
- A preregistered coding guide determined answer classification and organizational readiness before analysis.
Measures and Inference
Adaptation Rubric and Statistical Analysis
Ten-domain adaptation rubric
| # | Domain | Operational criterion |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Entity clarity | Consistent name, category, services, locations, and organizational identity |
| 2 | Machine-readable structure | Valid structured data and logically organized page markup |
| 3 | Answer-ready content | Direct explanations addressing natural-language questions and decision criteria |
| 4 | Expertise attribution | Named experts, leadership, credentials, authorship, and responsibility |
| 5 | Service and location specificity | Clear mapping of offerings to audiences, needs, and service areas |
| 6 | External corroboration | Independent profiles, citations, reviews, mentions, and proof signals |
| 7 | Evidence quality | Specific claims supported by examples, outcomes, policies, or documented experience |
| 8 | Content freshness | Visible maintenance, recent updates, and current operational information |
| 9 | AI accessibility | Content available without blocking, rendering failure, or unnecessary interaction |
| 10 | Recommendation readiness | Clear differentiation and sufficient context for confident selection |
Classification rule
An organization was classified as fully adapted when it scored positive on at least 7 of 10 domains and had no critical failure in entity clarity, machine-readable structure, or AI accessibility. Scores of 4 to 6 were partially adapted, scores of 1 to 3 were minimally adapted, and a score of 0 was not adapted.
Statistical methods
- Primary proportions were reported with two-sided 99% Wilson confidence intervals.
- Platform differences were evaluated using omnibus chi-square tests followed by adjusted pairwise proportion tests.
- Monthly change was evaluated using logistic regression with month as an ordered predictor.
- Sector results were standardized to equal category representation.
- Mixed-effects sensitivity analyses included random intercepts for organization type and month.
- The primary significance threshold was p < 0.001. This corresponds to greater than 99.9% confidence against the null under the stated statistical assumptions.
Power. The sample sizes provided greater than 99.9% power to detect a 1.0 percentage-point difference in summarized-answer rates and a 1.5 percentage-point difference in full-adaptation rates, assuming two-sided tests and the preregistered alpha level.
Reliability. Duplicate coding yielded Cohen kappa values of 0.93 for search-answer classification and 0.88 for organizational adaptation classification, indicating strong agreement under the coding protocol.
Results
Searches Producing Summarized AI-Generated Answers
Figure 2. Platform-specific and composite summarized-answer rates. Error bars show two-sided 99% confidence intervals. The composite assigns equal weight to each platform.
| Platform | Sessions | Positive rate | 99% confidence interval |
|---|---|---|---|
| 120,000 | 61.3% | 60.9% to 61.7% | |
| ChatGPT | 120,000 | 96.8% | 96.7% to 96.9% |
| Gemini | 120,000 | 93.1% | 92.9% to 93.3% |
| Equal-platform composite | 360,000 | 83.7% | 83.6% to 83.9% |
Primary test
The omnibus platform comparison was statistically significant (chi-square test, p < 0.001). Each pairwise comparison was also significant after multiplicity adjustment. ChatGPT and Gemini were substantially more likely than Google to produce a generated synthesis under the standardized query protocol.
Interpretive boundary
The 83.7% composite is a platform-standardized study result. It answers the question, "What share of equivalent sessions across these three environments produced a summarized answer?" It does not answer the separate market question, "What share of all U.S. consumer searches produced a summarized answer?" That result would require defensible platform-usage weights.
Change from January Through June 2026
Figure 3. Monthly summarized-answer rates by platform. Each month contains 20,000 sessions per platform. The composite is the arithmetic mean of the three platform rates.
| Month | ChatGPT | Gemini | Composite | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | 50.0% | 95.3% | 90.1% | 78.5% |
| Feb | 54.4% | 95.9% | 91.3% | 80.5% |
| Mar | 58.5% | 96.4% | 92.5% | 82.5% |
| Apr | 63.5% | 96.9% | 93.6% | 84.7% |
| May | 69.2% | 97.4% | 95.0% | 87.2% |
| Jun | 72.2% | 98.9% | 96.1% | 89.1% |
Trend results
The composite rate increased from 78.5% in January to 89.1% in June, an absolute increase of 10.6 percentage points. In the preregistered logistic regression, the odds of receiving a summarized answer in June were 2.24 times the odds in January (p < 0.001).
Most of the change came from Google, where the summarized-answer rate increased by 22.2 percentage points. ChatGPT and Gemini began the period at high rates and showed smaller absolute increases.
Organizational Adaptation to AI-Based Search
Figure 4. Distribution of AI-search adaptation maturity at the June endpoint. The fully adapted group met at least 7 of 10 rubric domains with no critical failure.
| Readiness classification | Organizations | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Fully adapted | 3,440 | 17.2% |
| Partially adapted | 7,760 | 38.8% |
| Minimally adapted | 5,860 | 29.3% |
| Not adapted | 2,940 | 14.7% |
June endpoint results
Of 20,000 organization audits, 3,440 met the full-adaptation threshold. The full-adaptation rate was 17.2% (99% CI, 16.5% to 17.9%).
Growth in Full AI-Search Adaptation
Figure 5. Monthly full-adaptation rate in the fixed organization panel. The fixed panel contained 10,000 organizations. June combines the panel and validation sample for the primary endpoint.
| Month | Fully adapted | Panel size | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | 1,080 | 10,000 | 10.8% |
| Feb | 1,200 | 10,000 | 12.0% |
| Mar | 1,330 | 10,000 | 13.3% |
| Apr | 1,450 | 10,000 | 14.5% |
| May | 1,580 | 10,000 | 15.8% |
| Jun | 1,720 | 10,000 | 17.2% |
Full adaptation increased from 10.8% in January to 17.2% in June. This represents a 6.4 percentage-point absolute increase and a 59.3% relative increase. The odds of full adaptation were 1.72 times higher in June than in January (p < 0.001).
Rate of change
The observed panel results show organizational readiness improving each month, but not quickly enough to close the gap with the prevalence of AI-generated answers. Even at the June endpoint, the search-summary rate remained nearly five times the full-adaptation rate.
Variation Across Organization Sectors

Figure 6. Standardized full-adaptation rates across 25 sectors. The dashed reference line is the 17.2% overall June result. Sector values are equally weighted by category stratum.
Sector Extremes and Interpretation
Highest and lowest readiness
| Highest-readiness sectors | Rate | Lowest-readiness sectors | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software, Technology & IT Services | 33.4% | Behavioral Health, Rehabilitation & Senior Care | 10.4% |
| Marketing, Media & Creative Services | 31.0% | Architecture, Engineering & Construction | 11.0% |
| Banking, Lending & Insurance | 24.3% | Agriculture & Animal Services | 11.3% |
| Business Services, HR & Administration | 23.1% | Manufacturing & Fabrication | 11.7% |
| Accounting, Advisory & Consulting | 22.4% | Wholesale, Distribution & Commercial Supply | 12.3% |
| Sector comparison measure | Results |
|---|---|
| Highest sector rate | 33.4% |
| Lowest sector rate | 10.4% |
| Absolute sector spread | 23.0 percentage points |
| Highest-to-lowest ratio | 3.21 to 1 |
| Sectors above overall rate | 9 of 25 |
Sector heterogeneity was statistically significant in the multilevel regression (p < 0.001). The sector values are measured, standardized study estimates calculated from the observed organization audits, with each category stratum weighted equally; they are not population-weighted national benchmarks. Digitally native and marketing-intensive sectors showed higher measured readiness, while sectors that depend more heavily on referrals, legacy websites, or offline reputation showed lower measured readiness. The analysis does not establish the causes of those differences.
Interpretation
Sector position should not be treated as destiny. The readiness score is driven by observable organizational practices. A well-structured organization in a low-readiness sector can outperform a poorly structured organization in a high-readiness sector.
Robustness and Sensitivity Analysis
Primary robustness checks
| Sensitivity specification | AI summary rate | Fully adapted | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary equal-platform analysis | 83.7% | 17.2% | Reference specification |
| Exclude brand and reputation queries | 82.1% | 17.0% | Direction and gap unchanged |
| Require answer before any external link | 78.9% | 17.2% | More conservative summary definition |
| Raise adaptation threshold to 8 of 10 | 83.7% | 11.6% | Stricter readiness definition |
| Remove critical-failure rule | 83.7% | 20.4% | Shows effect of minimum technical requirements |
| Equal sector weighting | 83.5% | 17.4% | Minimal change from primary result |
Confidence and precision
The narrow confidence intervals arise from the large observation counts. They represent sampling precision within the results, not protection against statistical specification error, measurement bias, platform personalization, geography, language, or changes in live product behavior.
Statistical significance is not practical certainty
A p-value below 0.001 indicates that the observed difference would be highly inconsistent with the null hypothesis under the stated sampling assumptions. It does not establish that the assumptions are correct, that the results generalize to all searches, or that the same values would be observed in replication.
Interpretation and Strategic Implications
The core structural mismatch
The results depict two systems moving at different speeds. Search environments increasingly synthesize information and make recommendations inside the answer experience. Most organizations, however, still publish content primarily for human browsing and conventional link ranking. The resulting 66.5 percentage-point gap is the central finding of the study.
What full adaptation means operationally
Full adaptation is not defined as installing one schema block, publishing an AI policy page, or adding an FAQ. It requires a coherent system in which the organization is clearly identified, its expertise is explainable, its services and locations are unambiguous, its claims are supported, and independent evidence reinforces the same story.
Potential consequences of low readiness
- Reduced likelihood of being named in AI-generated recommendations and comparisons.
- Greater dependence on third-party summaries that may be incomplete, stale, or inaccurate.
- Difficulty distinguishing a strong organization from a weaker competitor with clearer machine-readable evidence.
- Loss of visibility even when traditional rankings, reviews, or brand awareness remain strong.
Implications for leaders
The findings support a staged response: establish a reliable entity foundation, publish answer-ready expertise, connect claims to evidence, strengthen external corroboration, and maintain the system over time. Organizations should measure adaptation as an operational capability rather than a one-time marketing project.
Limitations, Ethics, and Conclusion
Limitations
- Actual U.S. organizations were sampled within 1,000 organization-type strata. Because each stratum received equal representation, the organizational results are standardized to the study design and are not population-weighted estimates of the distribution of all U.S. organizations.
- The equal-platform composite is not weighted by platform usage, search volume, demographics, or geography.
- Live AI products can vary by account, location, language, device, personalization, experiment group, and date.
Conclusion
Within the study, 83.7% of standardized sessions across Google, ChatGPT, and Gemini produced summarized AI-generated answers, while 17.2% of audited organizations met the full adaptation threshold at the June 2026 endpoint. The observed difference was 66.5 percentage points and remained substantial across the reported sensitivity analyses, indicating a large AI-search readiness gap within the standardized study design.
